Internet Home Based Business – Avoiding The Distraction Trap

Running an online or internet home based business requires no less focus than running a brick and mortar business.

People who make the decision to run an online business from home often make the critical mistake that somehow focus is less needed when you work from home and also when the business is online based.

This is a critical lapse in thinking that can really undermine other efforts to successfully run an internet home based business.

No-where is the threat of distraction more evident than online. There are so many avenues for distraction that it virtually takes an iron will at times to avoid what may seem very attractive on the surface.

From e-mails to online seminars, there is a wide array of activities pitched by online marketers all aimed at giving you more success with your business. If you are not careful, your time will be spent addressing these rather than really get about the task of running your online business.

So how do you not fall for the distraction trap when running your internet home based business? How do you really stay focused on executing the plans you have laid?

One of the most effective strategies that you can apply is by first getting a deep understanding of how devastating distraction can be to your business success. This in a word is awareness.

Awareness of how this can affect what eventually happens if you spend most of your time focused on what others are saying to you rather than what you should be doing with your online business is critical to taking conscious actions to avoid these distractions.

If you allow online distractions to become rooted in how you approach your work then it is almost a sure thing that you will experience little success and instead an abundance of frustration and failure with your online business.

Once you really get to understand the effect online distraction can have on your internet home based business, you will automatically create an incentive to avoid such distractions and put systems in place to enable you to work better.

This may seem too simple to be true but it is as powerful as it is simple.

So how do you increase this level of awareness? Here is a simple exercise.

  1. Make a list of the critical things you need to do to operate your business from day to day.
  2. For at least one week monitor what you do to see if you are getting these things done.
  3. For everything that seems to want to command your attention write it down and make a note if it is advancing your business or not.
  4. At the end of the week look at the things that came up that you either acted on or put aside. How many of the ones that advance your business did you focus on? And how many of the ones that did not did you actually put aside.

Whether you did a good job of focusing on what you need to get done to run your internet home based business or not, you will come away being more aware of how you spend your time and how distractions can really set you back.

You Just cannot afford to be constantly being distracted in running an internet home based business. There are just too many temptations out there.
